Setting up an LED Wall Light for my Photography Studio for Natural Family and Newborn Sessions

After having my second baby and making that change from mobile photographer back to studio photographer I know I needed a change. I wanted to turn my front reception room into a small lifestyle studio, however my biggest obstacle was my lighting as I there wasn’t enough natural light and my studio light with my huge PLM umbrella just took up far too much room, so it was time for a change and a little bit of DIY!

BEFORE

AFTER

After doing some research I knew it was the LED tubes that I wanted to use rather than the wall panels and the simple answer was simply TIME and COST. As I was still on maternity leave this was more of a trial and error process as I had always been used to studio lighting and I didn’t want to spend a fortune for me not to be happy with it.

These lighting tubes were from amazon and altogether cost around £80 which is an absolute bargain! The one thing I found most confusing was what lumens and what Kelvin I wanted, when deciding on this you need to look at your space and now bright and warm you want you images to be. I decided to go for 2200LK and 4000K which for my space was perfect and as photographers we are used to Kelvin however in LED world the lower the number of Kelvin the warm your images will be. It’s very confusing! But don’t worry I will pop links to everything I bought!

And finally diffusion is your best friend when it comes to LED lighting. you need to filter that light especially when it comes to natural newborn and family photography you want to make sure the light isn’t harsh and you not wiping out those soft shadows. I used a combination of both shower curtains and voile curtains.
